The Inca Trail: Everything You Need to Know Before Living the Experience

The Inca Trail is one of the most famous and spectacular hiking routes in the world. It follows ancient paths built by the Incas more than 500 years ago and ends at the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

If you’re planning to embark on this adventure, here’s everything you need to know to enjoy it to the fullest.

What is the Inca Trail?

It’s a trekking route that connects several Inca archaeological sites through stone paths, stairways, and breathtaking landscapes. There are two main versions:

  • Classic Inca Trail (4 days, 3 nights): The most famous and complete, where you’ll experience the entire journey before arriving at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku).

  • Short Inca Trail (2 days, 1 night): Perfect if you have less time but still want to live the magic of the trail.

Requirements for Hiking the Inca Trail

  1. Book in advance: Spots are limited (500 people per day, including tourists and guides). We recommend booking several months ahead.

  2. Official permit: Entry is only possible with an authorized permit, issued through accredited travel agencies.

  3. Good physical condition: You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should have enough stamina to hike 6–8 hours a day at high altitude.

What to Pack in Your Backpack

  • Personal documents (passport or ID).

  • Comfortable, light clothing, plus a jacket for cold nights.

  • Hiking shoes or boots that are already broken in.

  • Sunscreen and a hat, as the Andean sun is strong.

  • Insect repellent.

  • Rain poncho, since the weather can change quickly.

  • Water and energy snacks (nuts, cereal bars).

The Classic Inca Trail: Day-by-Day

  1. Day 1: Start at kilometer 82 (Piscacucho). A gentle hike through Andean landscapes, camping overnight at Wayllabamba.

  2. Day 2: The toughest challenge: climbing the Warmiwañusca Pass (4,215 m / 13,828 ft), known as the “Dead Woman’s Pass.”

  3. Day 3: Explore archaeological sites like Runkurakay and Phuyupatamarca, surrounded by breathtaking views.

  4. Day 4: Arrive at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) at sunrise, with your first unforgettable view of Machu Picchu.

Useful Tips

  • Acclimate in Cusco for at least 2 days beforehand to avoid altitude sickness.

  • Pack light: Remember you’ll be carrying your backpack throughout the hike.

  • Hire expert guides, who will explain the history and hidden secrets of the trail.

  • Enjoy every moment: It’s not just about reaching the destination, but experiencing the journey itself.
